Review

(WARNING: Spoiler ALERT!)

Igurashi Ganta is the only survivor of a mass slaughter on his class by a mysterious man on red cape. He's been framed on a crime that he didn't commit and has been sentenced to death. Upon receiving Death Sentence, he was then sent to a privately operated amusement park named "Deadman Wonderland".

Deadman Wonderland is Japan's only privately operated prison, built after the Great Tokyo Earthquake on ground zero. It gathers prisoners from all over Japan and raises money for the revival of the destroyed metropolis. To the public and the tourists that visit daily, Deadman Wonderland is a massive theme park-like facility run by the prison population. Unbeknownst to the general population, most of the prison's attractions involve cruel games of survival where many inmates lose their lives or are maimed for the entertainment of an oblivious public. While on his first few days on prison, he meet his childhood friend Shiro. Shiro is a girl with a white hair, pale complexion and dresses on a white skintight bodysuit with red circles and line designs, she also has a brown mittens and white neck warmer. Shiro is Ganta's savior. She uses her strength to protect Ganta, ever since their childhood. At the further episode of Deadman Wonderland, it is reveled that Shiro is the Wretch Egg and the Red Man which Ganta hated the most. Her personality suddenly shifts into an adult right after the Mother Goose's  System lullaby stopped, thus giving her the ability to kill massive group of people in just a snap. Whenever she doesn't hear the lullaby, she's disguising her self on an iron plated mask and crimson red cape, just like on Ganta and her childhood hero, Aceman.

Later on, Ganta discovers the said hiding place of the wretch egg, the G-block, upon hearing it from the other prisoners, and then decided to find his way through the G-block. Thanks to Shiro's help, the found a way through the G-block, and there meet Senji Kiyomasa, or also known as Crow. He helped Ganta, Yo, and Shiro while being chased by a Necro Macro, and Ganta then discovered that he is a Deadmen who became a part of an underground Death game, Carnival Corpse, and was named Woodpecker. The next day, Ganta won the Carnival Corpse against the Crow. Senji lost his right eye during the Penalty Game as a result of his lost, right after the Carnival Corpse. Senji's Branch of Sin can transform into a blade.

On the other hand, Yo Takami - a regular prisoner who's been looking after Ganta, finds his way out of the prison by turning the Systems power down with the use of Shiro's ability. Due to Yo's plan to cut the power from a section of the prison, the Mother Goose System is down. Which sends the Wretched Egg into awakening, that leaves her exhausted. She faints and is then taken away by the twins, while Yo tries to find his way back into G Block in search of Minatsuki.

Back to the G-block, Ganta meet Minatsuki Takami also known as the Hummingbird, after helping her from the attack of a large glutton man. Ganta then discovered that Minatsuki was his next opponent on the upcoming Carnival Corpse. During the Carnival Corpse, Ganta discovered the relation between Minatsuki and Yo, and finds his way to defeat Yo's sister by using headbutt.

After winning the Carnival Corpse on his way back to his room, he accidentally bump into Karako Koshio or the Game Fowl, and has been invited to join the underground group of G-block inmates who is against the Carnival Corpse, or also known as Scar Chain. The Scar Chain helped Minatsuki during her Penalty Game by only losing her hair instead of her important parts (eyes, hands, feet, liver, etc.).

Meanwhile, while everyone on the Scar Chain is planning on revealing everything about the G-block to the visiting inspector, they've been attacked by Genkaku, an Undertaker or the Anti-Deadman Corps who is assigned to maintain order on the G-block. Undertakes posses a technology that can nullify the Branch of Sin. While on Ganta's fight against Genkaku, his branch of sin didn't work on him, but no one believed him because Rokuro showed a fake video displaying that Ganta's attacked has been dodged by the Undertaker. The next day, their plan is coming to realty. Nagi "Owl" Kengamine, the leader of Scar Chain, together with Rokuro will take down the Operating room to help the others make their way out of the G-block carrying the data chip which has the complete information about the Carnival Corpse and G-block. At the end, the Scar Chain failed to deliver the data chip after Shiro showed up and throw the chip into the fire for her to save Ganta. Ganta, on the other hand, got pissed off and punched Shiro's face without realizing that there is no real data chip, instead a bomb created by Rokuro to take down all the remaining members of Scar Chain.

At the Operating Room, Nagi and Rokuro fight against the Undertakers. At the end, Nagi , lost his left hand and became the hostage of undertaker.

Because of the failed operation, the remaining members of the Scar Chain gathered on their base to discuss their plan of rescuing their leader, Nagi, without Ganta, and at the same time escaping the prison. Karako managed to go to the place where Nagi is, by disguising as an undertaker. Her plan was abolished as Shiro appeared before her and Genkaku. Both of them were captured. Ganta found out that the Scar Chain's meeting is an hour ahead that what Karako told her, so he then rushed to Undertakers and found Shiro and Karuko on the hands of Genkaku. Ganta then tries to shave them by using his new ability. The Undertakers were all down, and Nagi was about to attack Shiro but instead of Shiro being hit by Nagi, it was Ganta who received blow. Nagi keeps hitting Ganta, asking why are they all alive. Shiro asks what Ganta is doing, and that protecting her won't make her forgive Ganta for hitting her. Ganta begs for Nagi to stop, but Nagi doesn't, while Shiro claims she doesn't want Ganta saving her, and he should go away. She stops her protests when Ganta falls to the ground. Nagi prepares to knock out Shiro too, but Ganta pushes her away and he takes the punch again. Shiro calls Ganta a weakling and an idiot, telling him to move.

Karako is pushing herself across the floor, obviously in pain, asking Nagi to stop. Nagi's face is contorted with insanity, and Ganta asks why Nagi is like this. Ganta explains that there is no time for revenge. Nagi thinks about his child, his hope, and says that is now gone. He punches Ganta again, and Shiro goes to help Ganta. Ganta gets up and asks how Nagi can say that. He says that he knows how it feels, knowing the dead won't return, thinking about Mimi, Yamakatsu and the Red Man. He continues by saying that there is still hope, still light around him. Karako's bell rings and Nagi regains some of his sanity. Ganta exclaims that Nagi can't see it because his head is too low. It is still a mystery if Senji has been killed by Toto Sakigami or Mockingbird and steal his ability or not at the near end of episode 12.

The series ended while Shiro and Ganta were hanging out on a rooftop of a building, and Shiro was singing a song from their childhood.

Rating:

Story: ★★★☆☆

The Anime has a quite good story, why? Because the story is kinda short and the ending hangs me up. It will be great if there will be a season II of Deadman Wonderland.

Art: ★★★★☆

Nice art. Although the design was a little different from the manga and the Gore level is: ★★★★☆
I'm quite satisfied with the bloodshed. Well, I'm actually expecting that it has the same gore level as Elfen Lied.

Hope this review helped you alot. Have a nice time! :)

Note:
Sorry if there's no Anime screen shoot on this blog. I didn't managed to get on since I've watched Deadman Wonderland through our home player not on PC.
